About the Event:
The Grand River Hover-in provides an opportunity for
Hovercraft enthusiasts to come enjoy a relaxing weekend
of cruising and fellowship. Located on the Grand River, Ionia is located between Lowell to the west and Lyons to the east. This Hover-in gathers many hovercrafters from the state
of Michigan as well as neighboring states, and people arrive
from as far away as Kentucky and Pennsylvania to take part
in this event.
Schedule of Events:
Here is the schedule of events for the Mid-Michigan hover event in Ionia Michigan, the times are approximate we want it to be a laid back fun cruise weekend. Saturday the 23rd. We are looking at 11:30 to 12:00 unloading, look at the launch site then we will hover up to Lyons MI. approx. 12 miles. We will return back to Ionia and refuel we will then go to lunch at Oliveras, an Italian restaurant within walking distance of the launch site.
After lunch we will hover down to Grand Rapids veterans park this will be about a 30 mile trip one way. There is a parking area and boat ramp where we can get out and stretch for a few and then head back up to Ionia. After returning we will have hot dogs on the grill and George's award winning chili with a campfire to follow.
On Sunday the 24th, we will get started around 9:30 with a breakfast run to The Blue Water Café in Ionia, about a mile by car from the launch site. After breakfast we will hover down to veterans park in Grand Rapids then head back to Ionia with a stop at Lowell if you choose.
After returning to Ionia you can go up to the Burger King and get lunch or a frozen treat, after BK it's your time to enjoy before heading home.
At the Lowell fair grounds on Saturday, they are having a blue-grass music festival which is why our event could not be held there. However, you are free to stop by and take in the experience if there is room to get up the boat launch and park.
Camping will be available at the Ionia Fair Grounds. The cost is $5.00 for a primitive site and $20.00 for water and electricity. Please ensure you pre-register at the Ionia Free Fair website to guarantee a campsite before the event. Also, please register here so we can get a head count and ensure we have enough food. George and I are looking forward to seeing some old friends and hoping to meet many new ones.
The Dam at Lyons provides an opportunity
to test your courage. We DO
NOT recommend that you try this!!
Unique to this Hover-in, is the participation
of our friend Ron Miller and his rescue Air boat (which
has been used numerous times for rescuing hovercraft)
Camping (tent or motorhome) is available right at the launch
site. The only expense is $15/$20 camping fee per night. BBQ,
hot dogs and a bonfire are provided Saturday night. The
fairgrounds have bathroom and shower facilities available. For more details
